I'm reading Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon--And the Journey of a Generation by Sheila Weller and am devouring it in record time. It's really interesting and full of insider gossip and a lot of background on the songs. Of the three, all of whom I enjoy, Joni Mitchell is, has been and always will be an idol of mine and I've been listening to her music all week. I have just about everything she's ever recorded but my two favorite records by her are Blue and Court and Spark because they really informed my teenage years. Not to leave Carole King or Carly Simon in the dust. I think I must have worn my copy of Tapestry out and the same is true of Anticipation and No Secrets. But it's always been Joni for me. In the book, she comes off as cool, complicated, intense and difficult but with real integrity which hardly came as a surprise. The book's also neat because the entire music community seemed to be sleeping with one another and I eat that sort of salacious gossip up like nobody's business!
